Biography
Professor Andrea Sylvia Winkler is a neurologist and neuroscientist whose work connects global brain health, One Health and health equity. She is Co-Director of the Center for Global Health at the Technical University of Munich and Founding Director of the Centre for Global Health at the University of Oslo, where she holds a professorship in Global One Health.
Her research focuses on neurological conditions and diseases associated with poverty, including epilepsy, stroke and neglected tropical infections affecting the nervous system. With more than two decades of collaboration with partners in sub-Saharan Africa, she combines clinical research with prevention, professional training and efforts to strengthen neurological care in settings with limited resources.
She co-chairs The Lancet One Health Commission with Professor John Amuasi, examining the connections between human, animal and environmental health. Her work applies this approach to both infectious and non-communicable diseases, with an emphasis on translating evidence into policy and practice.
Professor Winkler has held a visiting professorship in Global Brain Health at Harvard Medical School. She co-founded and chairs the Harvard–TUM Global Brain Health Partnership. Her wider interests include digital health, implementation research and the social dimensions of health. She also co-founded Women for One Health, a network promoting the participation of women and underserved groups in research, policy and practice.
