Biography
Professor Samir K. Maji is an Institute Chair Professor at IIT Bombay and Professor-in-Charge of the Sunita Sanghi Centre of Ageing and Neurodegenerative Diseases (SCAN). He leads the Protein Engineering and Neurobiology Laboratory.
He earned his PhD in peptide chemistry at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, and held research positions at Harvard Medical School, UCLA, the Salk Institute and ETH Zurich before joining IIT Bombay in 2009.
His research examines protein misfolding and amyloid formation in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and related conditions. His laboratory also studies the biological functions of amyloids and develops biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering. Through SCAN, he advances interdisciplinary research into ageing, earlier diagnosis and assistive technologies.
His honours include the J. C. Bose Fellowship, Tata Innovation Fellowship and National Bioscience Award for Career Development. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and an award-winning educator.
